how many nursing bras do I need

How many nursing and maternity bras do I need?

We called in the expert for this million-dollar question!

“First things first: a comfortable bra is essential. Whether you have heavy or small breasts, it’s the first layer you put on. The better it fits, the better you’ll feel,” says Nina Cingel, lactation consultant at De Boezemvriend (a breastfeeding practice and store in Amsterdam).

We couldn’t agree more. But here’s the thing: you’re pregnant, and your breasts are changing (you’ve probably noticed). You’ve got other things on your mind than constantly worrying about your changing breasts and buying new bras. That’s why we’ve put together 3 tips to help you out!

Tip 1: Choose a comfortable bra (with a capital C)

Who has time for tugging, pulling, and dealing with an uncomfortable bra? As women and moms, we understand how annoying it is when your bra doesn’t fit properly. Choose quality over quantity: it’s better to have one bra that makes you feel as flexible as Beyoncé than five bras sitting unworn in your drawer.

Nina adds: “It’s very Dutch to avoid spending money on a good bra or to wear the wrong size in search of comfort. In my opinion, a good, comfortable bra is a must for taking care of your body - especially during pregnancy!”

Tip 2: How many (nursing) bras do you need?

So, you’ve found that one perfect bra—the one that makes you want to put a ring on it. But you might also be wondering: how many nursing bras do I need? The answer depends on your lifestyle and preferences. It’s not a bad idea to buy a second one. This way, you’ll always have one to wear while the other is in the wash. During the postpartum period, most women find that having at least three nursing bras is ideal: one to wear, one to wash, and one as a backup. A night bra that’s stretchy, seamless, and made of breathable fabric—or a wireless nursing bra—is also a great addition. Most women appreciate the extra support, and it can help prevent leaks.

Nina adds: “It doesn’t have to be expensive. There are affordable options that work well. Don’t buy a bra that’s too big. If it’s too large, it won’t provide support, and it will end up sitting idle in your drawer.".

Tip 3: Don’t overthink it!

A quick Google search reveals an overwhelming number of maternity bras. Nursing bras, seamless night bras, wireless bras, molded maternity bras… YOU NAME IT! It can be hard to see the forest for the trees, especially if this is your first pregnancy. It’s also tough to predict how much your breasts will change and which styles and sizes you’ll need.

Our advice? Don’t overthink it. Buy a bra that fits and makes you feel good (read: a comfortable bra). Nina’s bonus tip: “Don’t buy a bra that’s too big! A little elasticity is helpful for fuller breasts, and some flexibility is great. But buying a bra that’s too big doesn’t make sense. During pregnancy, the main function of a bra is to provide support.”
