When to buy a nursing bra?

We spoke to Nina Cingel, a lactation consultant at De Boezemvriend, a leading breastfeeding practice. Every day, Nina helps moms (and dads) navigate questions and challenges around breastfeeding. She’s the perfect person to explain everything about nursing bras: when to buy one and what to look for.

When should you buy a nursing bra?

According to Nina, there are two ideal times to buy a good nursing bra:

  1. When your breasts start to grow: This often happens early in pregnancy, within the first three months. At this point, your usual bras might no longer fit comfortably.

  2. Toward the end of your pregnancy: By this time, your breasts have adjusted significantly, and it’s easier to choose a nursing bra that fits well.

However, Nina advises against shopping for a nursing bra immediately after giving birth:

“Most women experience significant swelling in their breasts after childbirth (known as engorgement), but this is temporary and usually lasts no more than 72 hours. It’s also far from ideal to shop for a nursing bra while recovering in your postpartum bed—you’ll have more pressing things to focus on!”

What is the best nursing bra for you?

The simple answer: buy what feels good at the time. Your bra is the first layer you put on, so it’s essential to feel comfortable in it. Since your breasts will change constantly during and after pregnancy, comfort is key. The more comfortable your nursing bra, the better you’ll feel overall.

Avoid buying a bra that’s too big or “with room to grow”—it won’t provide the necessary support. And let’s face it, support is the whole point of wearing a bra!

Here’s a quick rundown of the do’s and don’ts:

✅ Do’s

  • Buy a new nursing bra when your current bras no longer fit.

  • Choose a comfortable bra made from soft, breathable materials.

  • Shop from a store or brand that specializes in good maternity underwear

⛔ Don’ts

  • Don’t wait until your postpartum week to find a nursing bra… you’ll thank us later!

  • Avoid buying a bra that’s too big—it won’t provide the support you need.

  • Don’t keep wearing uncomfortable bras during your pregnancy—you’ve got enough on your plate!
