Implantation symptoms and signs

Implantation symptoms and early signs of pregnancy

When it comes to implantation symptoms and signs, your body has a lot to say - even in the earliest stages. From tender breasts to subtle cramping, here’s everything you need to know about early pregnancy symptoms and how to stay comfortable through it all.

Implantation symptoms and signs: how to recognize them

Once the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine lining, you might start noticing pregnancy symptoms really early. Every body is unique, so the intensity of these symptoms can vary. Here’s a quick list of the most common implantation symptoms:

  • 🙊 Nausea

  • 🙀 Light cramps

  • 👀 Tender nipples

  • 🩸 Spotting (implantation bleeding)

  • 😴 Fatigue

  • 🥒 Food cravings (pickles, anyone?)

Many women also experience tender or sore breasts. Your journey might look a little different, with fewer or more symptoms—or even entirely unique ones.

When do implantation symptoms occur?

Implantation begins when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This is often accompanied by the first early signs of pregnancy. You might notice a combination of three or more of these symptoms, which can be an early indicator of pregnancy.

To calculate how far along you are, start counting from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). Why? It’s nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact moment of conception. That’s why healthcare providers ask about your menstrual cycle: is it regular, around 28 days? Or shorter or longer? This impacts your due date. For a 28-day cycle, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period.

Some women experience light bleeding, known as implantation spotting, during this time. Fatigue can also be an early pregnancy symptom. These signs often occur during the fourth week of pregnancy. While this might seem late to notice really early pregnancy symptoms, remember that counting starts from your LMP.

Sore breasts: a common implantation symptom

As many as 96% of women experience tenderness in their breasts as early as week three of pregnancy (counting from your LMP). Many women say their breasts were the first clue they were pregnant. Sore breasts are a common symptom of implantation and are caused by hormonal changes.

Hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and prolactin are highly active in a pregnant body, preparing your breasts for what’s to come: creating the milk ducts needed for breastfeeding. This rapid change can lead to swelling, sensitivity, and even pain in your breasts.
