Nursery design ideas: 3 ways to bring nature and calm into your baby’s room

Can you already picture what life will look like with your little one around? One thing’s for sure: things are about to change at home!

Where will your baby sleep? Designing your nursery is not only fun but also important. Research shows that a natural environment helps your baby relax and supports their development. But how do you create that in your baby’s room?

In this blog, Willemien, founder of Spriet, shares three practical tips full of nursery inspiration to help you bring nature and calm into your home.

Tip 1: Create a space where your baby can truly relax (and so can you!)

When it comes to nursery design, it often starts with one key choice: the wall color. Your baby’s senses are developing every day. They go from the darkness of the womb into a world full of sights, sounds, smells, and textures. And that’s a lot to process for such a tiny body. That’s why it’s so important to create a space where your baby can truly unwind (and maybe you too).

Choose colors you find in nature: soft greens, earthy browns, or airy blues - shades that instantly calm the mind. Combine them with natural materials like a wooden changing table, wicker baskets, or a wool rug. Add a linen blanket or soft fabrics to make the room feel warm and pure. Bonus: natural materials also help absorb sound for extra peace and quiet.

Tip 2: Bring the outdoors in

Getting some fresh air is wonderful, but how do you bring that same natural feeling indoors? In Scandinavia, it’s quite common for babies to nap outside. The fresh air helps them sleep more deeply and strengthens their immune system. So, regularly opening the nursery window is a great idea, just make sure your baby stays warm enough.

Natural sounds, like the wind or birds singing, can also help your baby feel calm and secure. And don’t underestimate the power of scent: the smell of pine, forest, or fresh linen can instantly relax both body and mind. And of course, a plant in the room is a must. A touch of green adds life, balance, and that extra bit of coziness to your nursery.

Tip 3: Encourage your baby’s curiosity

All this might sound like a zen retreat, but your nursery isn’t a yoga studio. As your baby grows, they’ll start exploring the world around them. That’s why it’s great to include something that stimulates their curiosity in a gentle way, like a nature-inspired poster.

At Spriet, they’ve created the Nature Alphabet Poster by Aniek Bartels, featuring animals and plants that can be found in your local surroundings. The cheerful illustrations invite daily moments of connection: looking, talking, learning together. You can choose a neutral version or personalize it with your baby’s name. It’s a joyful addition to the wall and a lovely way to introduce your little one to both the alphabet and the natural world.
